UM6P is redefining higher education and research in Africa
UM6P is redefining higher education and research in Africa through a purpose-driven, ecosystem-based model that balances scientific excellence with practical relevance. Since its launch in 2017, UM6P's mission is to develop and deploy technologies suited to Africa’s most pressing issues—from sustainability and food security to health and energy. The university’s Vision 2030, under the guidance of President Hicham El Habti, is an open, dynamic process that leverages collective intelligence through annual consultations, workshops, and online platforms, rendering research priorities and education strategies ongoingly responsive to the demands of students, faculty, and society at large.
The university is distinctive in bringing research, education, and industrial innovation together in a single impact-driven ecosystem. With its world-class infrastructure—including Africa’s fastest supercomputer, the Green Energy Park, and test farms—UM6P is enabling both fundamental and applied research at scale. Its tight industry collaborations, notably with the OCP Group, accelerate the translation of scientific advances into practical solutions for communities across Morocco and the continent. The university’s entrepreneurial bent is embedded in its curriculum and enhanced by specialized infrastructure like UM6P Ventures, which has already incubated over 1,000 startups. This is complemented by a heterogeneous student body and faculty, with a large proportion of women and scholarship students, to provide an environment in which innovation and leadership can flourish.
UM6P’s impact extends from academic excellence to tangible societal transformation. The university’s research work is focused on key areas such as precision agriculture, sustainable soil management, and uses of emerging technologies in education and health. With its emphasis on experiential learning and public engagement, UM6P is preparing graduates as change agents capable of addressing the challenges of Africa in the coming years. The university’s flexible Vision 2030 framework allows for continuous evolution, informed by regular feedback and assessment, and positions UM6P as a catalyst for African-led innovation and sustainable development with global relevance.
