UM6P launches the Data Center and Africa's most powerful SuperCalculator for scientific research and innovation

 

 

Mohammed VI Polytechnic University announced the inauguration of a new Data Center, certified Tier III and Tier IV by the Uptime Institute, also integrating the most powerful SuperComputer in Africa, under the name of the "African Supercomputing Center", thus offering Morocco a place in the world's Top 100 intelligent centers.

 

With the inauguration of this cutting-edge computing platform, UM6P is strengthening its presence in the country by offering technological solutions to contribute to digital sovereignty, security and processing of the data it uses.

 

The inauguration ceremony was marked by the presence of Mr. Said AMZAZI, Minister of National Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mr. Moulay Hafid EL ALAMY, Minister of Industry, Trade and Green and Digital Economy, Mr. Driss OUAOUICHA, Minister Delegate in charge of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Wali of the Marrakech Safi Region, the Governor of Rhamna and other personalities.

 

The power of the African Supercomputing Center - with a capacity of 3.15 petaflops at a rate of three million billion operations per second - gives Morocco and more broadly for the African continent the opportunity to breakthrough in scientific research and innovation in all areas, including :

 

● Modelling the genome of African plants to be protected

● Modelling of the microbiome genome, which covers all microorganisms living on the surface and inside soils, for a better understanding of fertility.

● Modelling satellite data for better agricultural land management

● The modeling of meteorological data for a better integration of renewable energies in the network ...

 

At the opening of this event, Hicham El Habti, President of UM6P declared: "Beyond the scientific objective, our will is above all to bring answers to industries, populations and territories. Big Data is an invaluable source of information that will help us understand how we can meet the challenges of an increasingly digital world.

 

Developed in partnership with the prestigious University of Cambridge, the African Supercomputing Center is ranked precisely 98th among the world's most powerful supercomputers, and has raised Morocco to 26th place worldwide, and to 1st place in Africa, in terms of computing power, ahead of Austria and Hong Kong.
