Geology & Sustainable Mining (GSMI)

The Geology and Sustainable Mining Institute (GSMI) is a leading research institute within the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P). Dedicated to driving innovation and excellence in the fields of geology, mining, mineral processing, sustainability and paleontology, GSMI conducts high-impact research and development in close collaboration with industry leaders, government bodies, and renowned academic institutions worldwide. By fostering multi-disciplinary partnerships, GSMI aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical applications in the mining sector.

Equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced analytical equipment, and cutting-edge field technologies, and staffed by a diverse team of expert researchers, engineers, and technical professionals, GSMI is devoted to producing pioneering research outputs and delivering high-quality consultancy and technical services. These efforts are specifically designed to address the complex and evolving challenges faced by the geology, mining, and sustainability sectors, including resource scarcity, environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and social responsibility.

Our mission is to advance scientific knowledge and promote sustainable practices by contributing to the responsible extraction and processing of critical and strategic minerals essential for modern technologies and economic development. We are equally committed to training experts and leaders, engaging local communities, and collaborating with national and international partners to develop innovative, practical solutions that enable sustainable and responsible mining operations worldwide.

Our vision is to be a pioneering institute in geology and sustainable mining, recognized globally for integrating cutting-edge research, transformative innovation, and comprehensive education to lead the transformation of the mining industry towards a responsible and sustainable future. GSMI strives to be a catalyst for positive change by influencing policy, promoting best practices, and supporting the global shift to a low-impact, resource-efficient economy.

GSMI operates through four specialized research divisions:

  • The Geosciences & Geoexploration Division,  addresses research questions at the intersection of geology and societal challenges, with a primary focus on the exploration of strategic raw materials, geoenergy, subsurface storage, surface Earth processes, and geohazard prevention. It also explores how innovative techniques—such as geophysics, advanced geospatial methods, and state-of-the-art field and laboratory instruments—are leveraged to advance these research topics.

  • The Mining and Minerals Processing Division, is committed to advancing innovative and sustainable practices in the management of mineral resources. Its focus includes optimizing extraction methods, developing innovative and eco-friendly mineral processing technologies, and implementing efficient waste management solutions. By leveraging the geometallurgical approach, the division aims to jointly maximize the economic value and sustainability of mining projects through the integration of geology, mineral processing, and data analytics

  • The Sustainability and Mining Environment Division focuses on addressing key sustainability challenges across the entire life cycle of the minerals industry. Its core research is dedicated to novel models that prioritize the conservation of finite resources, the promotion of circular economy principles, the reduction of environmental footprints, and the drive towards decarbonization.

  • The Paleontology Division, designed for the preservation, valorisation and study of the fossil record of Morocco, with a particular emphasis on the paleontological heritage of the phosphate basins.

Through pioneering research, strategic collaborations with industry and academia, and a firm commitment to sustainability, GSMI is actively shaping the future of geology and mining. The institute supports the global transition towards responsible resource management and environmental stewardship, helping to balance economic growth with ecological preservation, valorisation of the geological heritage and social well-being.
