Mohammed VI Polytechnic University and edX.org come together for the development of online education in Africa

Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) announced today the conclusion of a collaboration agreement with edX, the leading non-profit online training platform and MOOC provider (MOOC: Massive Open Online Course) founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). edX has over 130 global partners including leading universities, nonprofit organizations and institutions around the world. The goal is to offer quality courses to a growing community of learners around the world. This collaboration, which reinforces UM6P's digital strategy in its African dimension, will enable the University to: 1. Reach a large community of learners in Morocco, Africa and the world; 2. Develop and share content related to themes that matter to the African continent; 3. To be at the forefront of online education trends and initiatives; 4. Establish as a hub for online education and the creation of MOOCs in Africa. The first MOOC currently being implemented as part of this partnership is related to sustainable and optimal rainwater management practices. This is an online course created jointly by the Digital Learning Lab and the International Institute for Water Research of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University.


This course will impart knowledge on innovative and ancestral techniques of rainwater collection and management. It is part of the cluster of adaptation metrics for agriculture, water and resilient cities created at University Mohammed VI Polytechnic to follow the international climate conferences COP22 and COP23. Learners will have to spend two to four hours a week for four weeks. After this period, the course will remain open and accessible to the public. Other MOOCs covering different themes are also planned, including: smart agriculture in Africa, climate change (adaptation metrics), as well as the quantification of uncertainty applied to climate change.
