UM6P’s Rachid Guerraoui Wins the ACM Luiz André Barroso Award

Rachid Guerraoui, head of the Advisory Board of the UM6P College of Computing, has been awarded the ACM Luiz André Barroso Award for his pioneering contributions to distributed computing and his efforts to advance computer science education in Africa.

A professor at EPFL and Director of its Distributed Computing Laboratory, Guerraoui has been instrumental in shaping computing education, particularly through his leadership at UM6P. His work aligns with UM6P’s mission to foster technological innovation and talent development across the continent.

Google’s Chief Scientist, Jeff Dean, emphasized Guerraoui’s impact: “Luiz Barroso was a mentor and a pioneer. Guerraoui’s work in educating computing professionals across Africa makes him the ideal recipient of this award.”

Guerraoui will receive the award at the ACM Awards Banquet on June 14 in San Francisco. The honor includes a $40,000 prize, funding for a keynote talk, and a $10,000 charitable donation.
